Crackle Caracal DOB 4/1/92 – 2008 Arrived at Big Cat Rescue 12/29/94 Crackle arrived at Big Cat Rescue on 12/9/94 as a three year old and was very thin. She’s the sweetest Caracal we’ve ever met. Her name was given to her when a USDA inspector who came in when she was just born said “Oh look!
A litter of crackles.” He obviously did not know how to pronounce the name, and it was so cute it became her name! TRIBUTES FOR CRACKLE Anytime I got to be near Crackle, I would always greet her and she would stick her chin straight up in the air (like Snoopy when he danced) and rub on her enclosurewhich always made me laugh. She would follow me around the enclosure and look at me as if to say “Good morning Reginacare to get some exercise with me?” She was always a good girl at feeding time, too. But, what always popped into my head when I was near her was the Rice Krispies commercial.PUT SOME SNAP, CRACKLE, AND POP INTO YOUR MORNING!!!! And Miss Crackle certainly did that.I miss you a lot.Regina, Senior Volunteer Keeper Crackle was the first caracal that I ever saw in the flesh, anywhere in the world. In 2001, she was situated in a cage beside the visitor check-in area and, as people started to arrive, she emerged from where she was sleeping in the long grass.
This vivid-colored cat with amazingly long ear tips mesmerized me and I always looked for her whenever I visited. The visitor’s center has now moved and the building is now the education center with the original cage long gone. Crackle was moved to another area and I was lucky enough to be able to continue to see her during my visits over the next few years.
My nickname for her was always ‘sweetheart’ as that’s just what she was.Daphne, Volunteer Trainee Crackle was Rambo’s next-door neighbor, one of the cats I work with at the sanctuary. Everyday I spent with him, I also ended up spending with Crackle since she would meander over and plunk herself right next to me so she could share in our conversations. We quickly became a regular threesome. She would crack me up (no pun intended!) when I would look over and that adorable little head of hers would be poking completely through the cage wire and she’d be munching on the sweet grass outside of her enclosure. At feeding time, I’d always call out saying, “who’s the cutest caracal ever?” and I’d hear the leaves rustle and she would magically appear as if answering, “cest moi!” I used to hope that, one day, she would be moved closer to the tour path so everyone could enjoy her as much as I did. Our time together was a perk enjoyed only by those lucky enough to volunteer.
Now, every time I visit Rambo, I look over and see her beautiful spirit still with meJulie, Senior Volunteer Keeper I really liked Crackle. She was such a beautiful cat, probably the most beautiful caracal we have. I liked that she was always so feisty when I came around to clean. I will really miss her.Willow, Volunteer Keeper Looks are deceiving.
The old wisdom of, “You can’t judge a book by its cover,” applied to the sweetest caracal I have met, Crackle. One would never know there was a powerhouse hidden beneath her sweetness. Her power was not the kind that forces itself upon you or was aggressive. Crackle’s power was the stillness that was always present. I had the privilege and honor of working with Crackle for a short time doing operant training.
She would be very dainty in taking the piece of meat as I clicked. She would patiently wait, although her eyes would betray her excitement, as I prepared another piece of meat. Often, I would have to wake her up, but as soon as she smelled her treats, the stalks of grass would start to move, and I knew she was on her way. Crackle’s stillness spoke volumes.
She touched hearts. Her soul could be seen as you looked into her eyes. Dainty in her physical appearance, strong in presence, Crackle will never be forgottenLaura, Volunteer Keeper Caracals are one of the most beautiful of the small cats to me, and Crackle was certainly one of our sweetest caracals.

Something about her demeanor suggested a smile, and always brought a smile to my face when visiting with her. When we were told she was terminally ill, my heart really sank.
It’s sad to lose any of our cats, but Crackle was special to me. She will be missed and remembered.Beth, Volunteer Keeper What a wonderful and beautiful Caracal. I loved how, when I approached her enclosure and called to her, she would sometimes wander out to greet me and then follow me all the way around. It felt like we were taking each other for a walk.
Other times, I would have to look and find her lazing in the tall grasses, blinking at me as if I had disturbed her beauty nap. She always seemed such a relaxed and confident cat, not to mention elegant. She will be missed for her sweet personality and beauty.Lisa, Former Volunteer Keeper How much did you like this? Big Cat Rescue is the most amazing place! The cats are all rescued from bad situations either private owners didn't take care of them or circuses or roadside attractions that have abused them and now they're living out their lives in an environment full of love and the best care available. The tours give you the background on the animals and allow you to see them in a happy place - unlike a zoo or circus. The best tours are keeper tours, feeding tours or private tours.
They cost more but are so worth it! (Note in case you're wondering, because these animals are born in captivity, they can't be released into the wild.). Simba, the newest savannah prisonor to the hellhole known as BCR, deserves a home! These cats do not deserve to be dumped off at a dam roadside zoo like trash! I could not even read the poor kitty's bio. The owner loved this cat?! If she loved him he would of been turned over to 'The Savannah Rescue.'

This wonderful organization would of found a home for him that meets his specific needs. Instead he is never going to know the touch of a human, the closeness that most owners feel for their savannahs; and the savannah feels for their human.
This feline was betrayed by his owner. I hope she burns in hell along with the founder of BCR. He is now a prop for their campaign of hate against hybrid cats. This is not love. How can anyone that owns a savannah be so heartless?! I will pray daily that BCR is shut down, and those poor animals rehomed to a place that actually loves these animals.
Not to be used as a cash cow for the greedy founder and her family! Funny how I saw a video with Baskin saying what wonderful pets bengals are along with soft pelts. That was when she failed to breed early generation bengals. How funny Baskin's opinion changed, when she realized the money is running a scam rescue.
I hate BCR and their supporters! SET SIMBA FREE! I appreciate and fully support Big Cat Rescue’s mission.
The valuable education they provide, and the support they give to worldwide efforts to save and protect cats from exploitation and trafficking are vital to the their survival. Their facility is amazing - from living space, medical care, enrichment program and dietary needs they provide the closest “living wild and free” environment as possible. These are extraordinary, dedicated and well trained people who are committed to caring for cars rescued from unacceptable situations. Their sharing of stories about their own cats, as well as others around the world, provides us with opportunities to help make an impact on issues like breeding for cub exploitation, private ownership, smuggling, and hybrid breeding. I am proud to be one of their supporters. My dream to visit BCR finally came true and it was truly amazing!
Not only are the grounds beautiful, the staff and volunteers so nice, knowledgeable and hard workers but the cats are very well cared for and LOVED! Of course we all can agree that freedom is the best way for these magnificent cats to live, however, this is the next best thing as it’s not possible. I spent 3 days doing all the tours and each was special in its own way.

It’s very apparent how much these babies are loved and given the best life possible and it’s the cats the make the rules and the keepers are the trained ones - lol Big Cat Rescue is Truly a special place. When you learn about where most of the cats came from, your heart breaks. They now are able to live out their lives in a safe, loving and caring environment! I came to Big Cat Rescue on 28th April whilst visiting Florida from the United Kingdom. I have watched the live videos and followed BCR very closely over the last year and a half and the tour did not disappoint. The staff were so friendly and you can see just how much they care for these animals and want the best for them and all cats in the future.
I am so grateful I got to visit and see just how much work goes on and how lucky these cats are to get a second chance at a loving life. The work they do is incredible and I cannot wait to visit again Thank you for all you do. We toured the facility while we were vacationing in Florida from Canada.
We found the facility remarkable. The cats appeared content with their environment and demonstrated that the cats have enrichment, lots of exercise and free from stress!!! The volunteer guide was very informative and we both learned information about cats and 'cat trade industry'. We do not believe that anyone should own a wild animal and support the education program of this facility. Thank you to all the volunteers and staff, including the medical team, for the work that you do and your time dedication. It really shows in the standard of care you provide to these gorgeous cats!
Big Cat Rescue is an amazing place and a safe haven for these animals who can longer live in the wild mostly due to the ignorance and cruelty of humans. Unlike many zoos, they have very large spaces in which to live and roam, programs to keep them stimulated, and a very clean environment. The staff are wonderful and I learned so much during the 1 1/2+ hour guided tour that we took. The ability to be so up close and personal with these cats was such a privilege even though, of course, I would prefer they could be in the wild where they belong.
