Iso Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation
Posted By admin On 06.10.19Feb 22, 2011 - Windows Server 2008 R2 builds on the award-winning foundation of Windows Server 2008, expanding existing technology and adding new.
Hi, Long story short. I need a server to run RemoteApp for 1 application. The application will not run on 64bit systems. Currently they only sell servers with Server 2008 R2, which is 64bit only.
What I need is a server running Windows Server 2008 Foundation edition so that I can RemoteApp this program to 12-15 users. According to this site. Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation has downgrade rights to run Windows Server 2008 Foundation. However you can only obtain foundation edition OS's directly from OEM. When I called Dell, they won't sell me a server with 2008 Foundation on it.

Any other options? Downgrade rights are alot more helpful to larger corporations that have volume licenses and have piles of old install media laying around or MSDN licenses where you can just go download the older versions. I just checked MSDN and a quick search didn't turn up a Server 2008 Foundation Edition. There is no R2 Foundation Edition either. You are certainly licensed to use it if you buy the R2 version so long as you can find install media, but it seems like that may be a challenge.
I'm not really that familiar with software pricing, how much is it to bump up to the standard edition? The reason you can't find foundation editions is that they are direct from OEMs only as per Microsoft's wishes. Yeah its still kind of strange it isn't in MSDN though. They have practically everything else in there (Windows 7 Starter Edition for example, which is an OEM only product). It makes me wonder if the install media is actually the same and the only difference is the license (and license key). That is, I wonder if the install media labeled: 'Windows Server 2008 Datacenter, Enterprise and Standard (x86) - DVD (English)' would also work for the foundation edition, since it seems to have every other edition except the web edition which has separate media.

Since foundation comes with 15 CALs, the cost difference is about $1250 to go from foundation to Standard. Considering the server we need, only cost $800, that's a bit steep. Yikes that is quite a difference. It might be worth asking Dell if you can buy a server with 2008 R2 Foundation on it, but if they could also include the non R2 recovery/install disk in your order as well. If that doesn't work try contacting Microsoft and ask if you can by a non R2 disk. They sell replacement disks for their consumer OSes for like 10 bucks shipping, which is a common way to make the switch to a 64bit version if you bought the 32bit version.
Its not likely going to work, since its an OEM product not a retail product, but it never hurts to try. Server 2008 SP2, not R2, is available everywhere on x86 32bit. R2 is 64bit only.
If you need more than 4GB of RAM, then the Enterprise version will work, just be prepared to pay the price. Adding CALs is not a hugh expense. Well from Dell it's $220/5 CALS and the cost of the base OS is $590 more as well. That's where most of the cost is.

Remember this is with a cheap $800 Server. It appears that there is no such thing as Server 2008 SP2 Foundation x86 and my look was futile from the start. We'll likely just get Standard Edition and buy the CALS.
